Humans should be conscious for mitigating causes of climate change: President Bhandari

KATHMANDU: President Bidya Devi Bhandari has said the human race should be conscious of reducing the direct causes of climate change and adverse impact on the environment.

The President said this after observing the apple farm run by Agro Manang Pvt Ltd in Manang today.

On the occasion, the Head of State stressed that the locals have the main role in mitigating the causes of climate change by identifying them and in preserving the pristine environment of Manang.

Stating that the forests and plants have an important contribution to maintaining the environmental balance, she said the humans have a paramount role in this and that they should work with the commitment and consciousness that human existence will be protected only when the environment is protected through the efforts of all.

President Bhandari said she was saddened by the massive damage caused in the mountainous district Manang by flood and landslide following incessant rain on June 15.

She expressed the belief that farming and business done on the basis of climate adaptation helped take an individual and the country towards economic prosperity. Noting that climate change has been impacting globally and Nepal could not be its exception, the President urged one and all to minimize its causes.

“Its direct impact has been profound in the Himalayan region and it is manifested in the shifting of the glacial line. Attention should be paid to keeping the glacial line intact and conservation of natural resources while producing agricultural produce in keeping with the climate adaptation.

The local residents should give priority to the conservation of the natural products and the products that grow in the Himalayan region,” the President emphasized.

Stating that countries like Nepal have been suffering from the impact of climate change due to the big industrialized countries of the world, she said it’s our duty to alert the world community even for the existence of the human race. In this connection, she also recalled the 26th Conference (COP26) of the nations to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that is commencing in Scotland from today and Nepal’s participation in it.
The President opined that through such conferences Nepal should inform the world of the adverse impact climate change is having throughout the country and not only in our mountainous settlements.

President Bhandari arrived in Manang today. She observed the Agro Manang Pvt Ltd Apple Farm belonging to lawmaker Palden Chhopang Gurung here.

The Head of State also acquired information about the damage caused due to the flood and landslide in some places of Manang triggered by the June 15 torrential spots of rain and the situation in these places.

Agro Manang Pvt Ltd Apple Farm run by Gurung is the largest apple farm in the country. The apple saplings brought from Italy have been grown here. Different varieties of apple-like gala, Fuji, and golden are cultivated in 735 ropanis lands.

President Bhandari made general inquiries regarding the situation in the district from the chiefs and deputy chiefs of the local governments, the chiefs of the district-based government offices, and the security chiefs.
